Police identified the suspected shooter as Ryan Willis McFarland, 52, of Muscatine. Authorities said McFarland had left the residence before officers arrived and was later located on a trail near the Mississippi River.

According to Police Chief Anthony Kies, officers were speaking with McFarland when he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Officers and emergency medical personnel attempted to provide aid, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

As detectives continued investigating the initial shooting, they learned that there could be additional victims. Authorities subsequently located two men who had died from apparent gunshot wounds, with one discovered at another residence and the other at a nearby business.

Police said preliminary findings indicated that the shootings stemmed from a domestic-related dispute. Investigators believe all six victims were family members of McFarland.
